Coin collecting, or numismatics, is an exciting hobby for people of all ages. It’s important to learn how to properly store your coins, though, as damage can significantly depreciate their value and even render them worthless. There are many different methods of storing your coin collection, and each type has its advantages and disadvantages.
Cardboard 2×2 holders are a popular choice, with two coin-sized windows covered by Mylar plastic. They offer excellent protection, are inexpensive, and can be easily organized in three-ring binders available at most office supply stores. They do have the drawback of allowing the coin to fall out accidentally, and they also lack a large area for writing identifying information.
Rigid plastic coin holders are another excellent option for storing your coin collection. These are typically made from inert polystyrene and come in a wide variety of styles, each designed to house a particular coin size. Some are also clear so that both sides of the coin can be seen. They are more expensive than cardboard 2×2 holders and flips, but provide first-rate protection.
Air-Tite holders are among the most attractive coin holders and can be one of the least expensive storage options for your collector’s collection. They consist of a snap-together acrylic inner holder that snugly fits the coin, a polyethylene white or black ring that goes around the coin, and a burgundy, blue, red, or green-colored velour-covered cardboard display card into which fit both the holder and ring.
