If you’re new to the world of coin collecting, you might be overwhelmed by the many abbreviations and acronyms used in describing coins. This article is a primer to help you learn these important terms so you can fully enjoy your numismatic hobby.
ANA (American Numismatic Association) – The world’s largest and most active coin collector’s organization. Its headquarters are located at the North Cascade Avenue address in Colorado Springs, CO on the campus of Colorado College. This center houses the executive, editorial, membership, museum and authentication offices of the ANA.
Bag Marks – Minor marks on a coin caused by being stored or shipped in bags with other coins. Generally, they are not a good indicator of a coin’s grade or quality.
Blemish – A scratch, chip or flaw in a coin that detracts from its appearance and value. Some blemishes are natural and some may be intentionally created.
Bit – A two-real coin that was a popular means of United States commerce until 1857 when it was replaced by the quarter dollar.
Bullion Coin – A coin struck to be sold as a form of gold, silver or platinum bullion based on its intrinsic metal weight. These are usually sold in increments of a Troy ounce.
BN – Brown Toning – A coin with a light color that is usually not attractive to most people. Often seen on copper coins.
