Whether you are new to coin collecting or an old pro, there are numerous abbreviations that can confuse and even detract from the enjoyment of the hobby. This article offers a few of the more commonly used ones and explains their meanings.
Auction – An official gathering of buyers and sellers in which coins and other numismatic items are sold by an established firm.
Block – A group of a number of coins with similar characteristics that are grouped together for sale at an auction or other sales event.
Catalog – A printed list of numismatic items for sale, such as a Coin Dealer Newsletter listing or an online auction offering.
Counterfeit – A forged item that defrauds the buyer, including a coin struck with counterfeit dies, paper money printed on false plates or coins with added mintmarks or altered dates.
Flow Lines – A term that describes the lines left on a coin by the rotation of the die during striking. These lines can reflect light and create a “cartwheel” luster.
Flyspecks – Minute oxidation spots on a coin, usually on higher grade copper and nickel pieces, caused by exposure to small drops of moisture.
G – A grading designation that means the coin is Good with some wear and no major problems, but still has good detail. Also known as a 4 or 6 on the Sheldon Grading Scale.
RB – Abbreviation for Red Brown, a color of a coin that is copper and often associated with Proof coins.
