Collecting, comparing and sorting objects is an instinctual part of a child’s natural development. Introducing your niece or nephew to the hobby of coin collecting can be an exciting way to keep them busy, while helping them build a solid foundation for their math skills.
Whether they are just starting their collection, or it is something passed down to them by an older family member, kids can get a real sense of accomplishment as they find coins to add to their collection. It also encourages them to develop a sense of patience and responsibility – building their collection takes time, but the reward is great!
Coins minted in circulation are a good place for kids to start as the monetary risk is low. If they are able to find some rolls of circulated Indian Head pennies, Buffalo nickels or early Roosevelt dimes, that can be a great place to start. They can also pick up some reference books on the types of coins they are interested in and start reading up on their history. It is important to teach kids the basics of coin collecting at a young age so they can learn how to handle their coins properly. This includes using white cotton gloves to prevent smudges and fingerprints from damaging the surface of the coin, and not dragging coins across hard surfaces.
It is also important to help them keep a budget for their coins and to not purchase any that are damaged or overpriced. It is important to show them the importance of buying from a trusted dealer.
