Coin collecting is a wonderful hobby that has been enjoyed by people for centuries. In the past, coin collecting was part of the royal pursuits of the wealthy. But now, anyone with a love of history and coins can enjoy this fascinating hobby from the comfort of their home. There are many coin collecting groups online that can help you locate like-minded collectors all around the world.
There are about 2,500 recognized coin collecting groups in the United States alone. These groups often maintain a website where you can search up background information on their members. You may also join several of these groups and view your coin collecting friends’ profiles. You may also find many coin collecting clubs where members meet regularly for a variety of activities such as coin collecting congress, regional tournaments and workshops. These meetings are often held at local history museums or historic sites.
One of the most enjoyable activities that I’ve witnessed recently has been an afternoon of collecting coins at Grand Canyon National Park. On a very hot and humid day, we gathered around a wooden table on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. As we discussed our hobby, one of the more interesting conversations took place about American numismatic coins. A great number of individuals shared interesting stories about their grandfathers and what they collected in the Old West. One man in particular recalled a story about a Native American who collected a great number of coins related to his culture and the West that were placed in wagons to travel to the Grand Canyon.
