Coin collecting has been the hobby of kings for centuries but it’s no longer exclusive to the wealthy. A person who collects coins and paper money is known as a “numismatist.” Although it dates back to ancient Rome, coin collecting became popular during the Renaissance in the 13th century and gathered momentum among the rich elite. However, a person doesn’t have to be royalty to take part in this fascinating pastime and experts estimate that over 140 million people have collected state quarters alone.
One of the most interesting aspects of coin collecting is holding a piece of history in your hand. Many coin collectors start off with a collection of change and build their collection over time as they acquire more coins. Others purchase coins from family and friends or from local dealers. Some people even specialize in certain areas such as a particular time period, metal type or historical value.
Even famous celebrities have gotten involved in this intriguing hobby. Buddy Ebsen, the actor who starred as Jed Clampett on The Beverly Hillbillies and Penny Marshall, who played Laverne on the hit TV show Laverne & Shirley have rare coin collections that they enjoy. Andre Dawson, the Hall of Fame Baseball player has also taken up this pastime and attends rare coin shows.
Of course these are the exceptions to the rule, and most collectors have no desire to become rich overnight. The primary motivation is to collect something of interest, and in many cases, this is accomplished by creating a valuable heirloom that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
