Coin Collecting Holding Books

A new collector’s first purchase should be a quality coin collecting holding book. After this is purchased the new collector should save enough money to purchase a loupe (see picture). A loupe magnifies coins 5X, 7X, and even 10X. It is used for authenticating a coin, grading, examining toning, attributing varieties and much more. This is a tool every coin collector needs and it usually costs less than $50.

As the collection grows, a new collector should consider purchasing one or more high-quality coin albums for the holding of individual coins. These will allow the collector to keep track of his or her collection as well as provide an attractive display for the coins. A good album will also prevent oxidation and scratches on the coin. For the holding of small quantities of individual coins, a simple coin tray or cabinet will work well. For larger collections a special air-tight envelope or coin album is recommended.

The most successful collectors spend a considerable amount of time studying numismatics. They learn not only about the coins they collect but the dynamics of the market as well. They read as many books as possible about numismatics and they often subscribe to publications that focus on their area of specialization. They understand that to make a profit in this business they must buy low and sell high. Those who do not follow these rules are almost certain to lose money in the long run.
