Coin collecting is one of the oldest of all hobbies, and hoards of ancient coins have been discovered in archaeological digs. It is a great way to learn history while enjoying the fun of finding and saving interesting coins.
When starting a collection for the collections merit badge, Scouts must decide what type of collectibles they want to focus on. It can be a group of items related to a specific theme, such as action figures from a movie series or trading cards from a particular sports team. It can also be a collection of real items, such as stamps or medals.
A collection should be categorized and displayed properly. The Collections merit badge helps Scouts learn how to organize their collections and how to care for them so they last. It is important to keep a record of your collection and explain how you chose the items that belong in your collection. It is also helpful to share the story of how your collection came to be and what you have learned from it.
In order to complete requirement 10-d, the BSA updated the coin collecting merit badge requirements effective April 14, 2019. The Cupertino Coin Club is hosting a coin show at St Joseph of Cupertino Church on April 14. Scouts should get their badge pamphlet at the event and be prepared for a scavenger hunt style completion throughout the bourse floor. This will be done by providing worksheets to complete at various stations around the room.
