Coin collecting, or numismatics, can be both an enjoyable hobby and a solid investment. As such, it is important to keep track of your collection and how well your investment has performed. Whether you are a new collector, or have just inherited a collection, the task of cataloging and tracking your coins can seem daunting. Fortunately, there are many different methods of cataloging coins available, ranging from a simple checklist to sophisticated computer software.
One option is to use a spreadsheet. This is a good choice for those who are familiar with Excel, and it is easy to customize to fit your needs. The spreadsheet can be used to track the number of coins in your collection, their current value, and any other information you might wish to record.
The template is a basic sheet, with fields for the coin’s type, denomination, year, and mint mark. Other columns can be added or removed as desired, and running totals can also be included to keep track of the value of your coins over time.
Once the sheet is created, it can be pasted into Numista and filled in with the information stored there. The process can take a while, depending on the size of your collection and the speed of your internet connection. When the process is complete, you should hear a ding, and the values will be pulled into your sheet.
Some fields may not copy over to your sheet, most commonly the weight and diameter of the coin. These fields are still needed, however, so you can manually enter them if you wish.
