Coin Collecting Half Dollars
Whether you’re new to coin collecting or an experienced numismatist, the half dollar is one of the most popular coins in the hobby. They’re easy to get started with, and they’re available at a variety of prices.
You can also build a type set, which is a great way to learn about the history of the half dollar. To start, choose coins that interest you. Those that feature specific people or events can be fun to collect, but you may want to consider other designs too.
There are four key design types of U.S. half dollars, including Flowing Hair Liberty, Walking Liberty, Draped Bust with small eagle and Capped Bust with large eagle. They all have their own variations, silver content and price points.
If you’re looking for a coin to start a collection, look for circulated examples that are in nice condition and have pleasing eye appeal. You can purchase these at garage and estate sales, and from reputable coin dealers.
Some of the highest-grade Capped Bust half dollars are relatively scarce, but they still trade at a fairly high price. The most valuable date of the series, the 1807, can cost around $750 in Very Fine condition.
A year set of Capped Bust half dollars can be a challenge for the average collector, but it’s doable within even the most limited budget. Most dates are not difficult to find, especially the 1807 and 1815.
